If Only Moments That Never Leave Me

There’s always one moment, one split second in my mind, that I keep coming back to. I don’t know why, but it just sticks. Maybe it’s because it felt so real, or maybe because I wish I could change it, undo it, do it all differently. That moment. The one I keep thinking about. I remember it like it happened yesterday. I was walking down that street, the one I used to pass every day. The air was thick, kind of humid, and I could feel the heat on my skin. I remember the way the pavement looked, cracked in some places, worn out from years of footsteps. I was lost in my head, as usual, thinking about everything and nothing all at once. And then, out of nowhere, it happened. I saw her. Someone I hadn’t seen in a long time. She was just standing there, looking away, like she was waiting for something or someone. My heart skipped a beat. I don’t know why. Maybe because she looked so different, or maybe because I felt like I’d missed my chance. I froze for a second, just staring. My mind raced, trying to figure out what to do, what to say. But I didn’t do anything. I just watched her. And then, I wish I could say I went up to her, said something, anything. But I didn’t. I just kept walking. I kept walking and left her there, standing in the heat, like she was part of the background, like I didn’t see her. I remember that feeling—the mix of regret and longing, like I’d let something slip away. That’s the 'if only' moment I keep coming back to. What if I had just turned around? What if I had called out to her? Would things be different? Would they stay the same? I don’t know. That moment is like a ghost in my mind, haunting me. It’s not about what happened after, or what could have happened. It’s about the fact that I didn’t do anything. I just let it pass by. Sometimes I think about what I’d say if I got another chance. Maybe I’d apologize for not saying hi. Maybe I’d ask her how she’s been. Or maybe I’d just say nothing, just look at her and wish I’d acted differently that day. But I know I won’t get that chance. That’s why I keep replaying it, over and over. Like a movie I can’t turn off. It’s funny how one moment can stick with you so long. It’s funny how the mind clings to these tiny fragments of time, like they’re the only things that matter. I guess it’s because I wonder if I’ll ever get a second shot. Or if I’ll just keep carrying this 'if only' with me forever. Maybe someday I’ll find peace with it. Maybe I’ll forget, or maybe I’ll learn to accept that some moments are just meant to be what they are. But for now, I keep coming back to that moment on the street, that one that got away. Because sometimes, I think, that’s all we have—those 'if only' moments that remind us of what could have been, what should have been, and what will never be again.
